Speech Evaluator Role Briefing

1. ROLE INTRODUCTION

The prepared speeches are at the core of the Toastmasters experience and their evaluations are the primary method by which speakers receive pointers on how they can improve and, very importantly, encouragement.

2. ACTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The first thing to do, immediately upon receipt of this email, is to email the meeting Toastmaster to let her/him know you have received this. The email address can be found in the ‘Cc’ line of this email.
  • If you find that you are unable to carry out this role (because of unavoidable circumstances) you will need to find a replacement. Please liaise with the Toastmaster in finding a suitable replacement.

3. SPEECH EVALUATOR -­ THE ROLE

Before the Meeting

  1. It’s really nice touch if you contact your assigned speaker a few days before the meeting to introduce yourself, wish them luck and to discuss any particular requirements of the project being undertaken. Also enquire if there are any areas of performance of which the speaker would like you to take particular notice.
  2. Note, however, that your assigned speaker might change after the first announcement if late changes are made to the programme.

At the Meeting

  • Arrive with sufficient time to discuss your introduction with the Toastmaster and discuss the evaluation with the Speaker.
  • Remember to obtain the manual from the speaker to complete.
  • Before the Toastmaster introduces the speaker, he/she will ask you to stand at by your seat and read the speech objectives to the audience. Please remember that it is the Toastmaster who will call the speaker to the stage.
  • After the break, the Toastmaster will call you to the stage. Remember to shake hands with the Toastmaster and greet the audience by saying, “Mr/Mme Toastmaster, fellow Toastmasters and most welcome guests…”
  • When you have finished your evaluation, hand the stage back to the Toastmaster by shaking hands
  • Finally, if you have not completed your Competent Leadership Award and still need this role signed-­‐up you should: (A) give your CL manual to another member before the meeting starts with the required role identified and ask her/him to complete the required section; and (B) ensure you cover all of the objectives of the selected CL Project during your performance of the role
